1The LORD spoke to Moses, saying:2Send—for yourself—people to scout the land of Canaan, which I have given to the sons of Israel. Send a man for each tribe of his fathers, every one a prince among them.3And Moses sent them from the wilderness of Paran at the mouth of the LORD; all of them men, heads of the sons of Israel.4These are their names: for the tribe of Reuben, Shammua son of Zaccur.5To the tribe of Simeon, Shaphat son of Hori.6For the tribe of Judah, Caleb son of Jephunneh.7For the tribe of Issachar, Igal son of Joseph.8For the tribe of Ephraim, Hoshea son of Nun.9For the tribe of Benjamin: Palti son of Raphu.10For the tribe of Zebulun: Gaddiel son of Sodi.11For the tribe of Joseph, for the tribe of Manasseh: Gaddi son of Susi.12To the tribe of Dan: Ammiel son of Gamliel.13For the tribe of Sattur son of Michael.14For the tribe of Naphtali: Nahbi son of Vophsi.15For the tribe of Gad, Geuel son of Machi.16These are the names of the men whom Moses sent to spy out the land, and he called Hoshea son of Nun Joshua.17And Moses sent them to spy out the land of Canaan, and he said to them, "Go up this way into the Negev, and go up the hill country."18See the land—what it is like and the people who dwell in it: whether they are strong or weak, whether few or many.19What is the land like where he dwells—is it good or evil? And what are the cities like where he dwells—are they in camps or in strongholds?20And what—is the land fat or lean? Is there tree in it or not? And strengthen yourselves and take some of the fruit of the land. And the days were the days of the firstborn grapes.21They went up and spied out the land from the Wilderness of Zin to Rehob, near the entrance of Hamath.22They went up into the Negeb and came as far as Hebron, where Ahiman, Sheshai, and Talmai, children of Anak, were. Hebron was built seven years before Zoan in Egypt.23They came to the Wadi Eshcol, cut a branch with one cluster of grapes from there, and carried it on a pole between two of them, along with some pomegranates and figs.24That place was called the Stream of the Cluster because of the cluster the sons of Israel cut off there.25They returned from exploring the land at the end of forty days.
