- And they read how Mordecai had told of Bigthana and Teresh, two chamberlains who guarded the threshold, who sought to lay hands on the king. The record of their deed was written in the king's chronicles.
- So Haman went out that day joyful and with a glad heart; but when he saw Mordecai at the king’s gate—who neither rose nor showed deference to him—he was filled with wrath against Mordecai. Nevertheless Haman restrained himself and went home.

- The king said, "What honor or dignity has been done for Mordecai for this?" The king's servants answered, "Nothing has been done for him." Then the king said, "Who is in the court?" Now Haman had just come into the outer court of the king's house; the king said, "Let him come in." So Haman came in, and the king asked him, "What shall be done to the man whom the king delights to honor?" And Haman thought in his heart, "Whom would the king delight to honor more than me?"
- And Haman told his wife Zeresh and all his friends everything he had experienced. Then his wife Zeresh and all his friends said to him, “Let a gallows be made, fifty cubits high; and in the morning tell the king that Mordecai shall be hanged on it; then go in merrily to the king’s feast.” The proposal pleased Haman, and he had the gallows made.
Then Haman told his wife Zeresh and all his friends everything that had happened to him—his wealth and honors, the number of his children, and all the exaltations the king had given him; and he said, "Esther the queen has invited no one but me to the banquet she prepared, and tomorrow I am bidden by her together with the king."
Then his wise men and Zeresh his wife said to him, "If Mordecai, before whom you have begun to fall, is of Jewish descent, you will not prevail against him; you will surely fall before him."
While they were still speaking with him, the king's eunuchs came hastening to bring Haman to the banquet that Esther had prepared.
Then Haman said, "Make ready for me a gallows fifty cubits high; tomorrow speak to the king that Mordecai be hanged on it—then go merrily with the king to the banquet." So the gallows were made; and Haman went in that day to the banquet, glad and rejoicing of heart. But that night the king's sleep fled from him.
The king commanded the book of records to be brought, and they read concerning the account of Mordecai—that he had disclosed the plot of Bigthan and Teresh, two of the king's chamberlains who guarded the threshold, who had sought to lay hands on the king. The king said, "What honor or reward has been bestowed on Mordecai for this?" The king's servants answered, "Nothing has been done for him." Then the king said, "Who is in the court?" Now Haman had come to the outer court of the king's house to speak to the king about having Mordecai hanged on the gallows that he had prepared.
