  • Jeremiah 21:1 (thematic): Another oracle associated with King Zedekiah; both verses situate Jeremiah's messages in the reign of Zedekiah and connect prophetic activity to that king's period.
  • Jeremiah 52:4-11 (thematic): Later (canonical) account of the Babylonian siege of Jerusalem with specific dating tied to Zedekiah and Nebuchadnezzar, providing a parallel historical chronology to Jer 32:1.
  • 2 Kings 25:1-4 (thematic): Historic account of Nebuchadnezzar's siege of Jerusalem dated to Zedekiah's reign; serves as an external historical parallel for the chronological markers cited in Jer 32:1.

  • And deeds shall be written, and sealed, and witnessed, and taken in the land of Benjamin and in the places about Jerusalem, and in the cities of Judah, and in the cities of the hill country, and in the cities of the Shephelah, and in the cities of the Negeb; for I will restore their fortunes, declares the LORD.

The word that came to Jeremiah from the LORD in the tenth year of Zedekiah king of Judah—this was the eighteenth year of Nebuchadnezzar. And the army of the king of Babylon was besieging Jerusalem; and Jeremiah the prophet was confined in the court of the guard that was in the house of the king of Judah. Now Zedekiah king of Judah had shut him up, saying, 'Why do you prophesy, saying, “Thus says the LORD: Behold, I give this city into the hand of the king of Babylon, and he will take it”?' And Zedekiah king of Judah shall not escape from the hand of the Chaldeans, but shall be given into the hand of the king of Babylon; and his mouth shall speak with him face to face, and his eyes shall behold his eyes. And he will lead Zedekiah to Babylon, and there he shall remain until I visit him, says the LORD; for though you fight the Chaldeans you shall not succeed. And the word of the LORD came to Jeremiah, saying,

"Behold, Hanamel the son of Shallum your uncle will come to you and say, ‘Buy my field that is in Anathoth; for you have the right of redemption to buy it.’" And Hanamel the son of Shallum my uncle came to me, as the LORD had said, in the court of the guard, and said to me, 'Buy please my field that is in Anathoth in the land of Benjamin; for the right of inheritance and the redemption is yours; buy it for yourself—know therefore that the LORD has commanded you to buy it.' So I bought the field from Hanamel the son of Shallum my uncle, and weighed him the money—seventeen shekels of silver. And I wrote the deed and sealed it and took witnesses and weighed the money on scales. And I took the deed of purchase, the sealed copy and the open copy,

and I gave the deed of purchase to Baruch the son of Neriah, son of Mahseiah, in the sight of Hanamel my uncle and in the sight of the witnesses who signed the deed before all the Judeans who sat in the court of the guard. And I charged Baruch before them, saying,

"Thus says the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel: Take these deeds—this deed of purchase, the sealed deed and this open copy—and put them in an earthenware vessel, that they may remain many days."

For thus says the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel: Houses and fields and vineyards shall yet be bought in this land.

Then I prayed to the LORD, after I had given the deed of purchase to Baruch the son of Neriah, saying,

"Ah, Sovereign LORD! Behold, you have made the heavens and the earth by your great power and by your outstretched arm; there is nothing too difficult for you.

You show steadfast love to thousands, and repay the iniquity of fathers into the bosom of their children after them. Great and mighty is the LORD; the LORD of hosts is his name.

Great in counsel and abundant in deed—your eyes are open upon all the ways of the sons of men, to give to each according to his ways and according to the fruit of his deeds.

You showed signs and wonders in the land of Egypt to this day, and among Israel and among mankind; and you have made yourself a name this day.

You brought your people Israel out of the land of Egypt with signs and with wonders, with a strong hand and an outstretched arm and with great terror.

You gave them this land, which you swore to give to their fathers—a land flowing with milk and honey. And they came in and took possession of it, but they did not obey your voice or walk in your law; they did not do all that you commanded them to do; therefore you brought upon them all this calamity.

Behold, the siege ramps have come up to the city to take it, and the city has been given into the hand of the Chaldeans who fight against it because of the sword, the famine, and the pestilence, as you have declared. And behold, it is delivered into their hand.

Yet you said to me, 'Buy the field with money, and sign the deed and take witnesses'—though the city is given into the hand of the Chaldeans. And the word of the LORD came to Jeremiah, saying,

"Behold, I am the LORD, the God of all flesh; is anything too hard for me?"

Therefore thus says the LORD: Behold, I will give this city into the hand of the Chaldeans and into the hand of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, and he shall take it. And the Chaldeans who fight against this city shall come up and set this city on fire and burn it with the houses upon whose roofs they have offered incense to Baal and poured out drink offerings to other gods to provoke me to anger.

For the people of Israel and the people of Judah have only done evil in my sight from their youth; for the children have continued in the practices of their fathers—indeed they have provoked me by their deeds, declares the LORD.

Behold, upon my fury and upon my wrath has this city been to me from the day they built it until this day, to remove it from before my face.

For all the evil of the people of Israel and the people of Judah which they have done to provoke me—making their kings, their princes, their priests, and their prophets, and the men of Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem—

they have turned their backs to me and not their faces; though I taught them persistently, teaching them, they would not listen to receive correction.

They put their detestable things in the house which is called by my name to defile it. And they built the high places of Baal in the Valley of Ben-hinnom to cause their sons and their daughters to pass through the fire to Molech, which I did not command them, nor did it come into my mind that they should do this abomination, to cause Judah to sin. Now therefore thus says the LORD, the God of Israel, concerning this city concerning which you say, 'It is given into the hand of the king of Babylon by sword and famine and pestilence:'

Behold, I will gather them from all the countries where I have driven them in my anger and my wrath and in great indignation; and I will bring them back to this place and cause them to dwell securely.

They shall be my people, and I will be their God.

I will give them one heart and one way, that they may fear me forever, for their good and for the good of their children after them.

I will make an everlasting covenant with them, that I will not turn away from them, to do them good; and I will put my fear in their hearts that they may not depart from me.

I will rejoice over them to do them good, and I will plant them in this land in faithfulness, with all my heart and with all my soul.

For thus says the LORD: Just as I have brought upon this people all this great calamity, so I will bring upon them all the good that I have promised them. And fields shall be bought in this land of which you say, 'It is a desolation, without man and beast, given into the hand of the Chaldeans.'

Men shall buy fields for money and write deeds and seal them and take witnesses in the land of Benjamin and in the vicinity of Jerusalem and in the cities of Judah and in the cities of the hill country and in the lowland and in the cities of the Negeb; for I will restore their fortunes, says the LORD.
