Parallels

  • Ezekiel 6:2 (verbal): Almost identical imperative: earlier prophetic command also begins 'Son of man, prophesy to the mountains of Israel,' repeating the same address and form of proclamation.
  • Ezekiel 37:1-6 (thematic): Both passages feature prophetic speech directed to geographic features (valley/mountains) as part of a vision of restoration—Ezekiel prophesies to the valley of dry bones, symbolically animating the land and people.
  • Isaiah 44:23 (verbal): A prophetic summons addressing the mountains (and creation) to sing because of Yahweh’s saving acts; parallels the motif of directly addressing mountains to hear/respond to the word of the Lord.
  • Psalm 98:8 (thematic): Creation imagery (rivers, hills, mountains) rejoicing before the Lord—echoes the theme of landscape as witness/participant in God’s word and action, similar to commanding the mountains to 'hear' God's word.

Parallels

  • Ezekiel 36:5 (structural): Immediate structural parallel in the same prophecy: God responds to the enemy's taunt in 36:2 by promising restoration and vindication of the land and people.
  • Obadiah 1:12 (thematic): Condemns Edom (and others) for gloating over Judah's misfortune and claiming its possession—same theme of enemy exultation over Israel's loss of territory.
  • Psalm 35:21 (verbal): Enemies mock with the cry 'Aha! Aha!' when the psalmist stumbles—verbal parallel to the taunting exclamation in Ezekiel 36:2.
  • Ezekiel 35:15 (thematic): Prophecy against Mount Seir (Edom) highlights that the nation rejoiced over Israel's desolation and claimed its inheritance—closely parallels the claim in 36:2 and God's judgment on such rejoicing.
  • Psalm 44:13 (thematic): Speaks of Israel being made a byword and an object of scorn among the nations; neighbors' mockery and claiming of advantage echo the taunt about the 'heights' becoming another's possession.

Parallels

  • Deuteronomy 28:37 (verbal): Uses the same motif and language of becoming a 'byword' or 'proverb' among the nations as a curse for Israel — echoes the phrase about being on people's tongues and a reproach.
  • Psalm 44:13-14 (thematic): Speaks of Israel as a reproach and byword among the nations, mirroring the theme of national shame and taunting found in Ezekiel 36:3.
  • Ezekiel 36:5 (structural): Immediate contextual parallel within the same prophecy: expands on the nations' taunts and the reason Israel has become desolate and a possession of the nations.
  • Ezekiel 36:20-23 (thematic): Develops the related theme that Israel's exile and the nations' mockery profaned God's name, which prompts the promise of future vindication and restoration.

  • Like sacrificial flocks, like the flocks at Jerusalem in their appointed times—so shall the ruined cities be filled with people. Then they shall know that I am the LORD.

And you, son of man, prophesy to the mountains of Israel and say, ‘O mountains of Israel, hear the word of the LORD.’ Thus says the Lord GOD: Because your foes said of you, “Aha! The ancient heights have been our possession,”

therefore prophesy and say, ‘Thus says the Lord GOD: Because you have jeered and puffed yourselves up against them around, to make their land a possession for the remnant of the nations, and you have lifted up your tongue with reproach and slander against the people—’

therefore, O mountains of Israel, hear the word of the Lord GOD: Thus says the Lord GOD to the mountains and to the hills, to the ravines and to the valleys, to the desolate wrecks and to the forsaken towns which were spoil and a taunt to the remnant of the nations around them. Thus says the Lord GOD: I will act in burning jealousy and in my hot wrath I have spoken—because you made my land a possession for the remnant of the nations, rejoicing and exulting and treating it with contempt, to make it a spoil.

Therefore prophesy upon the land of Israel and say to the mountains and to the hills, to the ravines and to the valleys, ‘Thus says the Lord GOD: Behold, in my jealousy and in my fury I have spoken, because you have borne the reproach of the nations.’ Thus says the Lord GOD: I have lifted up my hand—indeed, the nations that are around you shall bear their shame. But you, O mountains of Israel, shall yield your branches and yield your fruit to my people Israel; for they shall soon come.

For behold, I am for you, and I will turn to you; and you shall be tilled and sown.

I will multiply humankind upon you—the whole house of Israel—complete; the cities shall be inhabited and the ruins rebuilt.

I will multiply upon you people and cattle; they shall increase and bear fruit. I will restore you as in former times and make you thrive more than at your beginnings, and you shall know that I am the LORD.

I will bring my people Israel upon you; they shall possess you, and you shall be their inheritance—you shall no more bereave them. Thus says the Lord GOD: Because they say of you, “You devoured people and bereaved your nations,”

therefore you shall devour no more people, nor shall you bereave nations any longer, says the Lord GOD.

I will no longer make you a reproach among the nations, nor shall you bear the shame of peoples any more; you shall not stumble any more, says the Lord GOD. And the word of the LORD came to me, saying:

Son of man, the house of Israel and they that dwell in their land defiled it by their ways and by their deeds; their conduct before me was like the uncleanness of a menstrual impurity.

Therefore I poured out my burning anger upon them for the blood they had shed upon the land, and because they had defiled it with their idols. And I scattered them among the nations and dispersed them through the lands; according to their ways and their deeds I judged them.

When the nations where they went came there, they profaned my holy name; when they said of them, “These are the people of the LORD, and they have gone forth from his land,”

then I had concern for my holy name, which the house of Israel had profaned among the nations where they went.

Therefore say to the house of Israel, Thus says the Lord GOD: It is not for your sake, O house of Israel, that I will act, but for the sake of my holy name which you have profaned among the nations where you came. And I will sanctify my great name, which was profaned among the nations, which you profaned among them; and the nations shall know that I am the LORD, says the Lord GOD, when I am hallowed in you before their eyes.

I will take you from the nations and gather you from all the countries and bring you into your own land.

I will sprinkle clean water upon you, and you shall be clean; from all your uncleannesses and from all your idols I will cleanse you.

I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you; I will remove the heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh. And I will put my Spirit within you, and I will cause you to walk in my statutes and be careful to keep my ordinances and do them.

You shall dwell in the land that I gave to your fathers; you shall be my people, and I will be your God.

I will deliver you from all your uncleannesses; I will call for the grain and multiply it, and I will not bring famine upon you.

I will multiply the fruit of the trees and the produce of the field, so that you shall never again bear the disgrace of famine among the nations.

You shall remember your evil ways and your deeds that were not good, and shall loathe yourselves for your iniquities and your abominations.

Not for your sake do I act, says the Lord GOD. Be ashamed and confounded; let your ways bring you to shame, O house of Israel. Thus says the Lord GOD: On the day that I cleanse you from all your iniquities, I will restore your ruined cities, and the waste places shall be rebuilt.

The desolate land shall be tilled instead of lying desolate in the sight of every passerby.

They will say, ‘This land that was desolate has become like the garden of Eden, and the ruined cities and the devastated and destroyed places are inhabited and fortified.’ And the nations that remain all around you shall know that I the LORD have rebuilt the ruined places and planted what was desolate; I the LORD have spoken, and I will do it. Thus says the Lord GOD: Yet for this I will be sought out by the house of Israel—I will be inquired of by them; I will make them increase like a flock of people.

Like flocks of consecrated sheep, like the flocks of Jerusalem at their appointed seasons, so shall the ruined cities be filled with flocks of people; and they shall know that I am the LORD.
